Himan Murmu is self-reliant with indomitable will power Dinajpur youth’s success in nursery, handicraft, cottage industry and pottery

Young Himan Murmu of Mirzapur Christian Para under Dinajpur Municipality has proved that poverty is not an obstacle if there is an indomitable will .
About 200 families live in Mirzapur Christian Para. This is where Himan Murmu spent his childhood and adolescence. Himan Murmu could not study far due to lack of family.
His father, Tarsius Murmu, died of illness in 2006. The elder brother went to Rajshahi to take care of the family, the younger brother started working as a day laborer. The two sisters got married and went to their in-laws’ house. Himan Murmu takes care of the family.
At first, he used to run the family by day labor, but dreamed of doing something himself. With that dream, the nursery started in only 9 decimals of land in the courtyard of the house. Here he makes and sells seedlings of various medicinal plants including Chirata, Harjora, Herbaso, White Lajjabati. At the same time, he cultivates gourd, sweet pumpkin, cucumber, barbati, beans, shrimp, kankrol, spinach, papaya, green chilli, datashak, ginger in sacks and sells them.
Besides, he made fishing nets, bamboo flutes, brooms, chicken cages, bamboo products. He made musical instruments like guitar, dhotara and harmonium with wood.
Not only that, his contribution to pottery is equally commendable. He is making fish, cows, bucks, elephants, swallows, dolphins, pangolins and various crafts with clay. He earns around Tk 15,000 to Tk 20,000 a month from these initiatives.
Locals say Himan Murmu is an inspiration for everyone today. He is spreading the message that if there is indomitable work and strong morale, the neglected youth of the society can also be self-reliant.
Elders of Mirzapur Christian Para area say that young entrepreneurs like Himan Murmu are changing the environment of the village. However, to make this initiative more sustainable, government support and advice from the Department of Agriculture are needed. Senior residents also said that if such nurseries are developed, the people of our area will be financially self-reliant. With regular training and technical support from the agriculture department, many more like Himan Murmu will come forward.
